This is a rich, sweet caramel sauce that can be made at the last minute that is great on bread pudding, gingerbread, popcorn,apple pie, chopped apples, ice cream, and anything else you want to put it on.
Ingredients
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

1.Make sure the sugar is completely dissolved in the water before the mixture boils; stray granules will turn your caramel gritty.
2.The mixture will thicken and change color as it cooks. Remove the caramel from the heat when it is just light amber; it will darken as it cools.
3.Heavy cream makes the caramel soft and sticky, rather than brittle. Be careful: The cream will bubble and splatter when you add it to the hot caramel.
